To empower young people to be better at solving real world problems that exist in our communities…..
This is the reason why we exist and why we continuously strive to be better at everything that we do. Last year was all about learning for us, it was a year filled with a great many radical changes. Changes to the way we work, to what we work on and who we work with! We have evolved so many times over the last 5 years in our quest to understand what we are and more importantly, what we can be in the future.
It was hard to maintain a single identity through all those iterations, to evolve our way of thinking as the organisation changes and somehow still retain the essential elements that make us an awesome team and a truly innovative organisation. This is why 2018 was such a monumental year for us. We found our sense of self and began to define what the TechVillage is through our shared beliefs, our shared vision and our innermost passions.
Who we are
We set out our mission and vision as an organisation. We identified our values and reoriented our work to focus more on our partners through our corporate innovation program. We segmented our community members and began work on building out our communities that we call tribes. We distilled our offering to our members into programs like Village Work, Village Learn and Ready4Work and began to work on building out entrepreneurship support through curated content and a curriculum. We reconnected with the innovative flare that exists in all of us and got back to building our own products, services and inventions. This reorientation was just the beginning, we went on to restructure our entire team and set to work on ensuring that we upskill ourselves and build the capacity that we need to scale.
The year ahead
The year 2018 taught us a lot about ourselves, about what we can do and what we are called to do in the service of our grand vision. Having refocused and strengthened our resolve, the year 2019 will be about outspoken action. We will move away from our more conservative approach to communication and herald our presence through engagement that permeates from our tribes and communities through to our networks and the greater ecosystem. We will teach and support innovation by focusing more on building so that our curated content and programs stay relevant and that our credibility grows, not from our brand but from the work of our minds and hands. We must dream and work for more.
More than looking
More than products and services, we will build out tools that the greater community and innovation ecosystem will leverage on for growth. We will lean on our ability to build networks and leverage on those to grow our ecosystem. We shall look back on this year as the year of the great convening, in pursuing our vision, we shall look to bring together, to connect and to create spaces for the brilliance that lies in collaboration to shine.
More than technology, we will focus instead on our people. We already know that technology is the answer, what we must seek to ask and then to answer is the question. We must be unafraid to ask the big hairy questions and to rally people together so as to surge forward in response. We must be more aware of the needs of our communities… yes to be curious about the future and to make ready for it today. We must sow the seeds and means that will feed the future, to reimagine wealth and how our people will learn and work for it.
More than meetups and events we must meet our communities at their points of need and not our convenience. More than competitions and programs we must stimulate growth in the startups that call the TechVillage home. We must strive to become the wind under their wings but be wary and careful to then not become their wings.
More than hope for the future
This year will ask more from us than all the previous years combined, for now we know what we must do and what we have become, and because of that we will achieve the grand status that is the village. Never has our environment been this unstable, never have we been more ready for what lies ahead. Through the fear and uncertainty that we fight off each day we must remember that we were built exactly for this. Battle borne and hardened, we were forged on these streets and we took it upon ourselves to become first a hub, a form of refuge and now a beacon of hope. That the dreams that we have and had will take root and grow through the blood, sweat and tears of our daily grind.
So let us look forward to the exciting challenges that lie ahead, let us look within for the strength and skill to navigate through them and let us look to each other for the courage to dare to still dream and to start living this dream. Let us embolden ourselves and be the resource that we need, the helping hand that they need and the bright light, the beacon of hope that needs to exist in these uncertain times.
Let us begin.
